Reagan Assassination Attempt

March 30, 2011

March 30 is the thirtieth anniversary of the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan. The C-SPAN Video Library has a number of programs related to this event. C-SPAN aired the original address that Reagan made prior to exiting the Washington Hilton when he was shot. You can watch the speech and at the end you can see the secret service agent waiting in the wings for the President. Also, the Secret Service Agent Jerry Parr appeared on a 1983 C-SPAN call-in program and talked about his role in protecting the president. This is one of the earliest preserved C-SPAN videotapes. Finally, the Newseum recently hosted a retrospective program featuring Parr, an author of a new book on the assassination attempt, and the attending emergency room physician. That program can be viewed here.

The Video Library also has some oral histories with Nancy Reagan and Michael Deaver remembering the event. Finally, there is an event after his presidency where Reagan returns to George Washington Hospital to lobby for passage of the Brady Hand Gun Bill.

All of these can be viewed in the C-SPAN Video Library.
