Senate Goes Nuclear
November 21, 2013
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) invoked the so-called nuclear option overturning the Senate rule that judicial nominations required a sixy-vote threshold. The drama unfolded over several hours on the Senate floor. First Senators Reid and McConnell discussed the motion.
Then there was a cloture vote and an appeal of the ruling of the chair that approval took sixty votes. That ruling was appealed and overturned.
Senate President Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy (D-VT), presiding over the Senate, stated the rules on filibusters.
That ruling was sustained.
These clips show the major portions of the debate. The entire Senate session for the day is viewable here.

Robert Shogan, 1930-2013
November 1, 2013
Robert Shogan, a long-time reporter for the Los Angeles Times and early guest on the C-SPAN network, has passed away. He appeared on C-SPAN twenty-four times over the last thirty years. In a timeless answer, he discusses criticism of the press and the role of the press.
In these early days of the call-in, guests were allowed to smoke on the set. Here is a excerpt of Shogan lighting a pipe when he appears in one of the earliest call-ins that we have preserved.
